Fort ShafterThe role of this US Army Base, Fort Shafter, in 1941 was to protect the US Naval Fleet while in Pearl Harbor.   Army General Short was told but never understood this, and instead chose to prepare for sabotage and invasion.  It is one of the many sad realities that led to the death of 2,388 Americans around Oahu in the Japanese air attack in the early morning of December 7th. "never forget"Chris talked with Major General James E. Donald on the flight from LA to Oahu.  General Donald served in Vietnam and The Gulf War and now commands the US Army in the Pacific.  The motto "never forget" is represented in the symbol in the upper right of his card.  There are 12 stars in all, 7 for the Big Dipper, 4 for the Southern Cross, and 1 for the Northern Star.  When put together, the numbers make the date 12-7-41.
USS Arizona memorialThe Japanese air attack sunk the USS Arizona at its mooring in Pearl Harbor.  This memorial is the final resting place for many of the battleship's 1,177 crewmen who were killed when a torpedo entered her forward magazine, exploding much of the Arizona's arsenal. USS Arizona from aboveWhen viewed from above, you can see the outline of the Arizona just under the water.

turretThe Arizona's superstructure was removed before the memorial was built.  One of the gun turret bases rises out of the water.  Oil still leaks from the Arizona and is visible just in front of the turret in this photo (click for larger image). USS ArizonaThis is the Arizona as she and her crew sailed through New York City, presumably in the late 1930's.

1,177 men died on the ArizonaAkin to the Vietnam Memorial in Washington, DC, the names of all those who died on the Arizona are listed on a wall in the memorial.  Just think of how the lives of their parents, wives, children, brothers, and sisters changed on that day. At Dawn We SleptThe definitive history surrounding the attack on Pearl Harbor, this amazing book is the result of 37 years of research and countless interviews with Japanese and Americans.

Go ahead, buy the book from Amazon.com.  The more we know about what happened, the better we can help prevent a tragedy like this from happening again.
